THIRTY-THREE

Laurence never smiled; he was far too serious for his age, but he wasn’t easily spooked. So his pale complexion combined with his clenched teeth suggested the news was bad. They walked away from the camp to a sheltered area under some trees. She sat and indicated he take a seat beside her. They looked out on the valley below; it all looked so peaceful. So deceiving. “Tell me.”

“The new agents, the ones London dropped two days ago…”

“Yes?” She wanted to shake the news out of him, he was speaking so slowly.

“The Germans have them.”

“What? How? When?”

“Luc isn’t sure. The landing seemed to go well; the Germans didn’t turn up until the agents were in the safe house.”

The hairs rose on the back of her neck. That was worse than she’d thought. If they’d been at the landing zone, they could have reasoned it was the sound of the planes that alerted them, but to wait until the next day to pick up new agents at the safe house suggested a traitor in the group with intimate knowledge of their procedures.

Laurence watched her face closely, and when she didn’t speak, he prompted, “There must be a traitor in London. It’s happened too many times to be the Germans getting lucky.” The boy must have heard the men discussing what had gone wrong; he wouldn’t have jumped to that conclusion alone. For one thing, he didn’t know about the other times – unless security had really broken down.

Adèle agreed, but now wasn’t the time to worry about that. They had to secure the remaining cells.

“Laurence, you get to the boys and tell them what’s happened. They must disperse. Head for Spain. You should go with them.”

“I am not running away.”

“I need you alive. You are no help dead.” Adèle’s desire to keep him alive caused her to snap.

“What are you going to do?”

“I have to go back to Lyon.”

His eyes widened as he brushed his hand over them. “That’s suicide, Claire.”

“I’ll be careful. Just do as I ask. Go.”
